Leaving Certificate Applied

The Leaving Certificate Applied programme is a two-year Leaving Certificate programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life.

The programme sets out to recognise the talents of all students and to provide opportunities for developing personal responsibility, self-esteem and self-knowledge, and helps students apply what they learn to the real world.

The two-year programme consists of four half-year blocks called sessions. Achievement is credited in each session. Courses are offered in three main areas: Vocational Preparation; General Education; and Vocational Education.

Assessment

Assessment takes place on the completion of modules, and there is also a final examination in each of the following areas:

  • English and Communication
  • Two vocational specialisms
  • Mathematical Applications
  • Language
  • Social Education

Students will also complete additional modules - including, but not inclusive of:

  • Engineering
  • Hotel, Catering and Tourism
  • Agriculture / Horticulture
  • Graphics and Construction Studies
  • Information and Communication Technology (Specialism)

Students who successfully complete the programme are awarded a Leaving Certificate from the Department of Education and Science. The certificate is awarded at three levels: Pass; Merit; and Distinction.

Continual Assessment

Students can earn credits (points) in January and May of both Years (5th and 6th Yr). Credits are earned from 3 Assessments

  1. 90% Attendance and Completion of Class Assignments (classwork)
  2. Tasks (projects) are completed in class in different subjects over the 2 years.
  3. Written exams.

62 Credits = Attendance and Assignments
70 Credits = 7 Tasks Project Work
68 Credits = 7 Final exams

Pass = 120-139. (60%-69
Merit. (70%-84%)
Distinction. (85%-100%)

Who should apply for LCA?

  • Students who want to stay in school and complete a Leaving Certificate.
  • Those students who are kinaesthetic learnings; those who prefer to learn by doing.
  • Students who are motivated by continual assessment.
  • Students who want to do Work Experience to help them with their career choice.
  • Students who want to develop skills which help them in their future career.
  • Students who know they want to go straight into the workplace after school
